 Old San
Juan (500 year old city and shopping district) is just 3 miles
away from El Canario, easily accessible by the B-21 public bus (75
cents). Just look for the bus stops along Ashford Avenue. Since
Ashford Avenue is one way, the return bus stops are on Magdalena
Street just one block away.
A
taxi to
Old San Juan should be about $12.00.
Walking tour maps
of Old San Juan are available at the
Puerto Rico Tourism Office at La Princesa near the bus terminal
and cruise ship piers. Old San Juan offers an abundance of
charm and history with its Spanish architecture, cobblestone
streets, museums and forts.
From
Old San Juan, you can take the ferry and then a short shuttle to learn how they make rum at the
world-famous Bacardi factory across the bay from Old San Juan in a town
called Cataño. There is also a 'Don Q' rum exhibit near the ferry terminal
on the Old San Juan side of the bay.
If
you have a full day to explore, don't miss nearby Luquillo Beach and the
only National Park in the Caribbean - El Yunque Rainforest. Its a fairly
easy drive from San Juan as long as you miss the rush hour
traffic - or see the front desk for available tours.
Another recommended day trip is to the
southern Caribbean coast of Puerto Rico, just 1 1/2 hours from
San Juan, where you'll find Ponce, a city filled with unique
charm, history and architecture.
The Ponce Museum of Art is one of the most impressive anywhere and is
definitely worth a trip. If you want to continue, beyond Ponce
is the area where Puerto Rico's world famous coffee is grown in the
mountains,
Heading
out west - explore the subterranean world of the Rio Camuy Caverns, the
Observatory at Arecibo or the world-class surfing at
Rincón, Puerto Rico.
Continue
around the west coast to the beach town of Boqueron which is perhaps the
most popular beach for Puerto Ricans - the Caribbean waters are very calm
and warm on a huge crescent beach with perfect white sand.
All
